Kaelyn

Our grand daughter Kaelyn is a talker. She is always trying to tell you something. Many times we are not sure what she is sharing, but now we can make out some of the words. She is a go getter and loves to visit.

She also enjoys dancing. Anytime there is music she is dancing.

I just love this time of year...so much joy and giving. I recently came across a site that reminded me of this even more. It was sitonsantaslap.com. Dogs are so precious. They are always happy to greet you and such great companions. I thought these pictures were so cute. The first picture says "So Dad left when he found out about Mom and the Panda." The second pictures says "Look . . . I was thirsty man, deal with it . " How sweet are they?!

Christmas

It's amazing to me how the time does fly. Christmas is next week already. Can you believe it? Everyday that I am free, I am working on getting ready for that day. Wrapping, Baking, Shopping, decorating and more. There is so much to do. I do like to stop and thank the Lord for sending Jesus, our Lord and Savior. This is His birthday party we are preparing for. It is His special day, not ours. It should be about Him. May you all remember that in celebrating Christmas with your families this year.

Sweet & Salty

I usually make several goodies around Christmas. Chex mix is always a hit. It is the one that is salty and has pretzels and peanuts. Another that I make is a sweeter treat that has Chex in it, but also has a mixture of brown sugar, Karo, butter, soda and vanilla. Bill really likes this one. In fact, I am sure he has already gone through several handfuls. I do have to admit, it is very good and addictive.

Changing Sizes

Today we did a little shopping. Bill bought a new pair of jeans. He tried on two pair and decided that the jeans company must be changing how they size the pants. The two pair were the same size according to the tag. They were cut differently though. Bill thinks he can still wear the same size pants that he had a few years ago. I think he may need to buy a bigger size. That middle age thing creeps up on all of us. I will let him think that it is the jeans company that made an error on the tag.

Last night we had chicken pot pie for supper. It is a meal that we haven't had for awhile. It was very good and best of all it is a meal that is great left over. Pot pie is so easy to make too. Our kids weren't big fans of it, but Bill and I enjoy it. Zoe likes it too.

Winter is here!

It's official! With the sleet and six inches of snow, it now feels like winter. The temperatures have been dipping into the single digits. WOW! That seemed to come quickly. I guess it is December and when you live in the north country it is to be expected. Waking and hearing those snow plows at 4 in the morning, reminds you of what it is like outside. Today was one of those days. We're counting down to spring already, but I guess it is nice to have a white Christmas.

Moving Snow

We had quite a lot of snow the past couple days. Bill had to shovel the driveway and deck this morning. The deck had to get cleaned so Zoe could get out to the grass. It didn't take him long to get done. Our road crew has done a great job so far this year getting the street cleaned. Hopefully they will continue to do a good job throughout the winter.

Recently Bill and I went to the movie "Fireproof". We were so impressed. It was very good. We felt like everyone should give this movie a try. Throughout life we all have relationships and this movie shares ideas and principals dealing with just that. In the movie they have a book called the Love Dare. We have since purchased this book and are anxious to begin reading it. I think it should be a good source for our daily living.

Jake

We went down to visit our son Jake this weekend. We had such a great time! We helped put up his Christmas tree and went shopping. He bought a new area rug and shelving for his living room. It sure is looking nice in there. His Kitty Mylie is also in the photos. She sure is a nice kitty. While we were there we had to have lunch at the Olive Garden of course. It was very good and we had a great time visiting!

Too Much Ice

The past couple days we had rain, snow and ice. Too much ice if you ask me. Actually ice is something we can do without on the streets and sidewalks. Jake wasn't able to drive to work today due to the icy roads in his town. They got more snow than we did also. Up to 5 inches of snow fell in eastern Iowa. I told someone this morning that spring was just around the corner. I do believe that but I know that the 'corner' is more like a big curve that will take a little while getting around.

Christmas Decor

We usually put up our Christmas decorations the weekend following Thanksgiving. This year was no exception. Christmas Lighting

The past few years we have hung some icicle lights on our house gutter. Bill never wanted to decorate like that but I talked him into it. We only hang the lights on the back of the house and it takes about 1/2 hour to do the job. We use a timer so that we don't have to walk outside to turn the lights on and off. We found a box of new lights downstairs that we must have purchased on sale at some point. They are now up and ready to use.

We have several televisions in our home. Actually we have too many. Most are the old, heavy style but we do have a flat panel type too. Keeping Warm

I have written about our new fireplace before but I really can't say enough about it. We have enjoyed sitting in the addition at night, being kept warm by the gas fireplace. Hippo

One of our dog Zoe's favorite toys is her stuffed hippo. It is several years old and has been stitched up because the stuffing was coming out. It is also missing an ear. I have no idea where that went. It stinks quite badly but Zoe really doesn't seem to mind. I think it might be time to throw it in the wash. Zoe even knows the toy by name. We can say 'go get your hippo' and away she will go to get it. I can't remember where we got it, but if I happen to see another, I am buying it.

Just A Peek

This morning it was raining and the forecast mentioned that four letter word 'snow'. I know that isn't the word I wanted to hear like so many of you. Right now, however, the sun is peeking out and it is actually quite pleasant outside. Could it be that the weather station is wrong? Surely that can't be the case! I hope they are wrong about the weather. I want to see more of the nice weather we have been having.

New Look

We now have a new look in our family room. We recently had a gas fireplace installed and yesterday we had the job completed by having the mantel attached. It is absolutely beautiful. I don't like cold weather but I have to say that I am actually looking forward to a cool night so I can turn on the fireplace. I know that sounds terrible but it is true.

Black Friday

Years ago I never had any desire to shop on black friday. I had heard of the all the crowds and really did not want to venture out in them. Then one year my daughter convinced me that the sales were too good to pass up. We went out, and ever since we have not missed a year! Black Friday is just too good of a shopping day to pass up. Wouldn't you agree?? It's the best shopping day of the year...especially with the holidays following so close behind it! I have to say that Christmas gifts are what I'm mainly shopping for on this day. I can't help but find things for myself as well. There are just so many great deals that no one could pass up!

This year I'm particularly interested in finding Babies R Us Deals as well as many others. I have two Grandbabies who will be 1 at Christmas time and they are so much fun to shop for. It will be fun to find great sales so I'm able to buy them more. I went online looking to see if my favorite stores have put out their Black Friday ads and they had not yet. Warmth vs Cold

It has been unusually warm the past few days. Temps have been as high as the 70's. They are saying that tomorrow will be another nice day for us and then it is suppose to turn. We have chances of freezing temperatures by the weekend. I guess we may be using our new fireplace soon. Not that I am in a hurry for winter, because I'm not.

Blackberry Plants

I have been looking into living a healthier lifestyle. My husband and I both feel as we grow older we need to watch our weight and become more physically fit. With that in mind we have been hearing that the safest foods to eat are those from plants and trees and not man made foods processed in plants. A person can grow their own plants such as Blackberry plants and fruit trees. We have found that home grown garden veggies are some of the most flavorful.

Fireplace

We are so excited about finally having our new gas fireplace installed! The contractor has been busy building the oak hearth, mantel and casing. He brought by the hearth the other day, so we could call our plumber to work on hooking up the gas to it and venting it out the side of the house. They arrived early this morning and by noon they had it up and running. They are so neat to watch. You have the flame without all of the mess and fuss of wood. Now our contractor can come and place the casing and mantle and we are set. They have ordered us a remote for it also. It will be handy and convenient. :)

This is great for people like my children who are already in their careers and working. They can work and go to school at the same time! Boy, have the times changed!! Baseboard

We will soon have our fireplace installed. It has been quite the long process but I see the end in sight. The unit will be up against a south wall and Bill needed to pull up some baseboard. Once the fireplace is in he will need to cut the board to fit on each side of the unit. He has the right tools so it shouldn't be a problem. We are anxious to start it up and feel the warmth. We have had some pretty cool evenings already this fall.

Quick Supper

Tonight we had a quick supper which included fried eggs and corn bread. It was sort of a breakfast kind of meal. It was fast and easy to make. We like corn bread with butter and syrup. Sometimes I just top the corn bread with jelly. Bill isn't much of a fan of that. It was a light supper but it was enough for us. When a person is busy, it's nice to come up with something quick. This was it.

Stuffy Head

The past couple of days Bill has had a stuffy head and nose. I think he has had some headaches too. Along with that his throat has been scratchy. He very rarely gets feeling like that. I hope that by tomorrow he is feeling better for work. Last night he took some sort of liquid medicine and it made him very tired. He took it quite early in the evening so he pretty much slept on the couch much of the night. I have heard others have been feeling the same way.

Fall Back

Soon it will be time to fall back again. You know, when we set our clocks back one hour? It throws some of us off a bit, but we soon compensate for the time change. Right now it is quite dark on the way to work and getting dark on the way home. That fist day it seems to help us feel like we are getting a little extra rest but actually once you are used to getting up, it can be hard to just sleep an hour more. At least that is the way it is in our house.

Black Friday

Years back I never took advantage of the Black Friday shopping day. With time though, I had heard more and more people talk about the fantastic deals they were getting on this amazing shopping day. After having gone out and shopped on this day over the past few years, I now can say that it's not only the best shopping day of the year but also one that I will not miss in years to come. I would say that it's most important to me now more than ever as our family is continually growing. I not only have kids and their spouses to buy for, but also grandchildren now too. Zoe In The Movies

Tonight Bill took a short video of our dog, Zoe. I have posted about her many times but thought it would be nice to put her in the post. Now you can see her as she attempts to perform some little tricks. She didn't do very well at them although she can if she wants to. She can sit, beg, roll over and spin around. We call it dancing when she spins around. Even if she isn't the greatest at tricks she is the best dog.

Children's Books

There are so many neat books for children. We had kept some from when our kids were young but now we are stocking up for the grandkids when they come to our home. Some of these books are from 10 to 30 years old. They are still in print but I was surprised at when they were actually written and published. We enjoy reading to our grandkids and I know they love it too.

The Season

For several years now my kids have been talking about Facebook. I wasn't sure what that was, but knew that they liked it. At the time it seemed to be geared more towards high school and college kids. Scott and Jenna went to the movie "Eagle Eye" this past weekend. We babysat little Kaelyn. :) They said that the movie was very good. We decided to go and see it last night. It is a good movie. It is action filled and definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat. You have to wonder how much of this could be true. How much control does our Government have and use?

Temptation

Everyone faces temptations in life. There are many temptations that surround us and can draw us in if we are not careful. Find out more about temptation in 1 Corinthians 10: 6-13. God is faithful and will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able. With temptation He will make a way of escape, so that you may bear it. We know that in todays world there are many examples of each one of these temptations and that many of us have failed in different areas. I am so glad that Christ has made a way and we can resist temptation. Food

It's almost noon and I haven't had breakfast yet. I can jump on the computer and time just flies by. I should take a break and eat. Some say that breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day. I'm not sure I would agree with that statement, but my tummy is telling me that it may be correct. :) Now, what should I eat? There is the healthier route to take but, will I take it? There is fruit, toast, waffles, eggs, cereal and more. Decisions decisions....... I doubt I will eat much.

Online Buying

Bill likes to shop on the internet for great deals. We have purchased several things on Ebay and are considering selling some items also. I think we have received some good deals in the past. Our daughter Jenna actually bought her first car on Ebay. It was a very nice car and at a wonderful price. She loved that car! The car was a Ford Escort ZX2. Jenna still talks about that car and would like to get another one some day. Maybe she'll shop Ebay again.

Chilly

It has been quite chilly at night this week. It can't seem to make up it's mind. I am glad that during the daytime it has still been very warm. One day this past week, I actually had to run the air conditioning for a short time in the morning, because it was so stuffy in the house. Then by evening it had gotten much colder and I had to kick on the furnace. Weird! I don’t like to be too cold and have to wear heavy clothing. I see why people enjoy going to a warm climate during the winter. Some day I would like to do that too. For now, however, we will just get bundled and put up with this cold.

Golf Again

Bill was at a conference for a few days. The first day he arrived he was involved in a golf tournament. He totally enjoyed himself, I could tell. There were over forty people in the golf outing and they just randomly choose them for teams. Bill didn't care who he golfed with, he never does. He just enjoys having the opportunity to play. He liked the rest of the conference also, but I know that golfing was the highlight of the trip.

We enjoy watching the videos that our kids take. It is a great way to view them and our grandkids. Some of them are actually taken by using their cell phone. When we can't see them all in person it is handy to watch these videos. It is the next best thing to being there. Modern technology is amazing!

Bill was going golfing yesterday. I sure hope it was warmer there then it has been here. He gets so excited for the chance to golf. He talked about it several times in the past few days. He has been looking for shorter clubs for me. Maybe even a Jr. set. I'm pretty short. We'll see what he finds.

Funerals

As we grow older so do others around us. Yes, I know that makes perfect sense, but what changes is this. You find that you are attending more and more funerals. Our friends, loved ones and acquaintances are passing away. There have been three funerals in the past three weeks. My mother had a funeral last week. She has now lost all of her family in the generation above her. Isn't that something? That would seem strange, but I guess that is the natural way of events. It's sad to see so many young people who are losing their lives due to illness, accidents and other reasons. That just shouldn't be.

Christmas Dinner Recipes

Well, Fall is here and Christmas is right around the corner. The days fly by and before we know it the holiday season will be upon us. I am planning to have my family and extended family at my home this year for the Christmas holiday. I am starting to think about some Christmas dinner recipes. What might be good to serve this year? I will have to ponder on that a bit.

Isn't it something how destructive the whether can be? I recently had a friend send me some pictures of the devastation that Hurricane Ike left in it's path. Galveston Island, Texas was hit pretty hard. Not only were there issues with flooding, but also with fires that they could not get too.

Steam Cleaner

Today we had a flooring man here putting in tile. It actually took him two days to finish. After he had left I realized the mess that was before me. Grouting can leave a lot of dust and dirt. I started with the walls and worked my way down to the floors. I thought it sure would be nice right now to have a steam cleaner. They are chemical free and can leave that sanitized feeling when you're done. I may have to look into one of those.

LA

My youngest son recently took a business trip to Los Angeles, California. He and two co-workers had a week of training in programing robots. While visiting, they did a little bit of site seeing. They traveled up to the Hollywood area and saw the Chinese Theater. They stopped into a unique restaurant for supper and then took in the sites right before them. There were several people dressed up and entertaining on the streets. It sure wasn't like home.
